Trondheim Art Museum

The project for the Trondheim Museum aims to transcend the rigid boundaries between architecture and the city through the concept of threshold.

The proposal aims to blur the boundaries between museum, plaza, and urban fabric, creating a dynamic intermediate space. The first design element includes a continuous and porous ground floor that transforms the site into a civic pedestrian passageway. Along with the existing theater, the new building defines a central plaza programmable for exhibitions and workshops, making the museum an extroverted and participatory infrastructure.

The second element introduces a veil on the façade that acts as a visual filter: rising at the base, it exposes the creative processes and workshops; on the upper floors, it conceals the exhibition areas to stimulate the curiosity of passersby. The building is organized into three volumes connected by bridges and arranged around a shared atrium. Each block has distinct heights and functions: the smallest houses the entrance and offices, the largest the permanent exhibitions, and the third the auditorium.

Internally, compact cores organize flows, leaving the floor plans free, alternating views of the works and the city. Finally, the conversion of the existing parking lot frees up the land, transforming a driveway into a public pedestrian area. The museum thus becomes a flexible cultural anchor, capable of uniting art and community in a hybrid institution.
